Orlando ACS Inspires Young Scientists with Celebrating Chemistry Magazines

Celebrating Chemistry magazines displayed at a local library.

The Orlando Section of the American Chemical Society is on a mission to spark a love for chemistry among children in Central Florida. For the past few years, we have distributed Celebrating Chemistry magazines to local library systems, providing resources that make chemistry accessible and exciting for young learners.

In 2024, the initiative reached a new milestone, with 5,100 copies of the magazines distributed to library systems across five counties in Central Florida. These magazines are now available at local library branches, reaching children in countless communities throughout Central Florida.

The Celebrating Chemistry magazines are more than just reading material—they’re a gateway to hands-on learning. Local libraries have incorporated the magazines into various activities, from science workshops to family-friendly events, helping kids explore chemistry through experiments, puzzles, and real-world applications.

By making chemistry engaging and relatable, the Orlando ACS is nurturing the next generation of scientists and innovators, one magazine at a time.

For future distribution or if you have any question about the distribution, please contact Duy Le (duy.le@ucf.edu).

By-Laws Amendments Vote

The Orlando Section ACS needs to update our by-laws to align with recent changes to the American Chemical Society By-Laws. As a voting member, you will be able to vote on the updated by-laws.  Following our current by-laws, at least 2/3 of votes cast shall be required to approve the new by-laws.

Key changes include alignment to the new membership types and removal of paper ballot for voting processes (that are now completed digitally). The new by-laws are provided below for your perusal. You may compare to the current by-laws that are found on our website here along with a marked-up version that shows all the changes here.  If you have any questions, please contact Laura Sessions lsessions@valenciacollege.edu.

Chemistry & Community: A Membership Meet-Up

Chemistry & Community: A Membership Meet-Up
Date: Saturday, September 21
Time: 10:00 AM
Location: Valencia College Lake Nona Campus room 148
12350 Narcoossee Rd., Orlando, FL 32832

Join us for an engaging and informative morning with Bill Easter, a subject matter expert in the area of Semiconductor Chemical Mechanical Polishing and Material Development and local serial entrepreneur who founded Semplastics, X-MAT, X-BATT and DioQuest. The title of the presentation is: The Accidental Entrepreneur – A Perspective on Material Systems, Chemistry, and Innovation

How does one become an entrepreneur using chemical/materials expertise? Innovation is the intersection between invention and societal needs using a multi-disciplinary approach. As society advances, how can chemists and material scientists participate in innovation?  This talk will highlight both the challenges and opportunities of being an entrepreneur by highlighting the life journey of a particular scientist/engineer.

After Bill’s presentation, stay for the ACS Orlando Section’s Executive Committee meeting. This is a great opportunity to learn about our section’s activities this fall and get involved with planning for the upcoming SERMACS 2025 conference.

Don’t miss this chance to connect with fellow members, gain valuable knowledge, and contribute to our local chemistry community! Students and prospective members are welcome! Light lunch will be served.

To ensure adequate lunch, please RSVP: https://valenciacc.ut1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3jvPt7se2UpMG0K

SERMACS 2024: Communication Symposium

The ACS Committee on Public Relations and Communications (CPRC) will sponsor a symposium at SERMACS 2024 in Atlanta October 23-26, 2024, titled “Innovative methods of communicating the value of chemistry to the public.” Please forward this email to your constituency and/or place on your local section or division web site.

We are particularly interested in hearing from students (undergraduate or graduate) who are involved in outreach or other communication avenues; the best student presentations will receive cash awards.

The abstract submission begins April 29, 2024; in the past the hard deadline was in the summer, about 6 weeks later. Students are not easy to contact during the summer, so if you know of any student groups that communicate the value of chemistry to the public, please ask them to write an abstract and submit through the ACS MAPS portal.

The SERMACS home is https://sermacs2024.org and most of the seven tabs contain information.
